Hi, I’m Hester. I am a photographer and writer interested in people and what makes them who they are. That’s why I work with five different categories in which I capture basically all important aspects of life. When I’m not out and about, you can find me at home in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I’m open to commercial, editorial and personal projects, both here and abroad. In all categories I provide visual stories and stories that need both words and images. Together, we’ll pin down the story you would like to tell, and explore the best way to do that.
For as long as I can remember I have taken an interest in the world around me. I even studied cultural anthropology for a little while because I had this dream of roaming the earth forever. Only to discover that I’m more interested in persons than in cultures. So I switched to theology and studied life. When I travel, I like to research that place, but I work without a fixed plan. I’d rather discover what a place has to offer the moment I’m there. My favourite thing to do is to observe how locals live and how they move around.
I love to capture all the details that make up life, however big or small. At home, at work, or in a public place that you love to visit. I’d love to photograph you and your family going about your daily life, enjoying a meal together, doing the dishes, reading a book. Or capture you at work, doing what you love. Another possibility is to follow you over a longer period of time. For example, during pregnancy and the newborn phase, or during severe illness and the last phase of life.
I love how food brings people together. Sharing food establishes and reinforces connections that might not have been there before. In this visual age the beauty or ‘instagrammability’ of a dish sometimes seems to be more important than the story that is behind it. However, the importance of the story behind a dish should not be forgotten.
In 2012 I started food photography while I was traveling for eight months. I wanted to document more than important landmarks and world heritage sites. So I made photos of every single dish we ate. Now, when I look at these photos, I don’t just see the dish. They transport me back to restaurants, street side food stands and back alleys. They invoke memories of smell and taste. I could create this experience for your restaurant, cookbook, website, or magazine.
My history with food is somewhat complicated. For a while I hardly tolerated food at all, but with some help I was able to reduce this to a couple of intolerances. As a result of this, the chances of me cooking a recipe created by someone else without making adjustments are very slim. In 2016 I started this blog to have a place to collect and share my allergy friendly recipes. If you are a brand that would fit into my food philosophy, I could create recipes for my blog and/or your website using your product.
Wherever I go, it is important to me that I feel at home. I make an assessment based on photos if a hotel, hostel, place to work, or a venue can do that for me. And most of the time it turns out my feeling was right. I’m probably not the only one making these types of decisions in an inexplicable, irrational way. Therefore it is important to tell the story of your location through good-quality images to attract prospective customers.
When you’re looking for something different than those cheesy wedding images you find scattered all over the internet, you have come to the right place. I prefer to make bright and colourful images that are a little bit quirky. Of course, of you as a couple, and all those details you have put a lot of effort in. But more important: all those meaningful moments you share with your family and friends. I would be honored to be a part of your wedding.
However, there are other important celebrations in life. For example, an anniversary, an engagement, or a christening. Do not hesitate to contact me to discuss the possibilities.
