Schiermonnikoog

I’m not really sure what to write about my visit to this tiny island along the Dutch shore. What stayed with me most is the nothingness, the empty land, the beach that reminded me somewhat of what I think the landscape of the moon looks like. I could tell you that I think the one tiny village on this island where you only travel by bike, bus or foot, seems a bit somber, and it is about the last place in the world where I would want to live. And yet, there is something about Schiermonnikoog that has me returning someday in the future. At that time when I’m in need of some solitude. A moment to clear my mind and catch my breath. Not in summer. Then the island is flooded with tourists. However, the end of winter seems perfect to me.
